As of end-December 2024, a total of 8,074 Romanian children had both parents working abroad, by 821 fewer than at the end of September 2024, shows data centralized by the National Authority for Children’s Rights Protection and Adoption (ANPDCA).
Also, the number of children with at least one parent working abroad was down to 54,798 at the end of December 2024 from 58,007 as of September 30, 2024.
Of the 8,074 children with both parents working abroad, 7,440 were in the care of relatives up to the fourth degree of kinship, without protective measures instated, and the rest were placed with a foster assistant, with residential services or other families or individuals.
As many as 40,357 children had one parent working abroad (42,298 as of September 30, 2024), and of these, 38,761 children were in the care of relatives up to the fourth degree of kinship, with no protective measures instated. At the same time, 933 children were in the special protection system, such as in the care of a foster assistant, in residential services or with other families/persons.
Also, 6,367 children came from families where the sole breadwinner was working abroad. Of these, 5,635 children remained at home in the care of relatives up to the fourth degree of kinship.
The total number of children left behind in the special protection system was 2,060 as of December 31, 2024 (by 25 more compared to the end of September), of whom 362 were in the care of a foster assistant, 352 were living in residential services, 1,250 were living with relatives up to the fourth degree of kinship, and 96 were in the care of other families or individuals.
