The independence won in 1877 compels us today to remain consistent with the values that are the foundation of our membership: freedom, rule of law, solidarity, respect for human dignity and commitment to peace, said interim prime minister Catalin Predoiu in a message on the occasion of National Independence Day – May 10.
„Today, Romania marks 148 years since the proclamation of state independence (…) We are grateful to our forefathers for their political intelligence, the sense of history with which they guided the nation towards Europe, their courage and sacrifice in the struggle for independence, freedom, democracy and Europeanism. The expression of this respect and gratitude for their tireless work to forge the nation into a national state based on European values and principles, can find no other expression than in our work today in consolidating and modernizing the state and keeping the country in the constellation of democracies organized on the same European and Euro-Atlantic values and principles,” said Catalin Predoiu, according Agerpres.
The European construction is no longer just a gift of the forefathers, but it is a valuable asset that must be defended for the good of all the nations that are part of it, the interim prime minister emphasized.
„Romania today is an integral part of the European Union and the Euro-Atlantic community, a state that firmly assumes its place among the consolidated democracies. The independence won in 1877 compels us to remain consistent with the values that are the foundation of our membership: freedom, the rule of law, solidarity, respect for human dignity and commitment to peace,” Predoiu said.
The most dignified way of celebrating and honoring the achievements of the predecessors is to continue their work of consolidating the state, with professionalism, integrity and responsibility, the interim prime minister emphasized.
„In this spirit, every ruler and leader – regardless of level – has a moral obligation to work with vision and respect for the public interest. Patriotism today means competence, honesty and loyalty to democratic and Euro-Atlantic values. Let us keep alive the ideal of independence and let us live up those who have made today’s Romania possible. Happy birthday, Romania! Happy birthday to all Romanians!,” Predoiu further conveyed.
