The retail trade turnover volume (excluding trade in motor vehicles and motorcycles) increased in the first quarter of this year compared to the same period in 2024, both in gross series by 3.5% and in seasonally and working-day adjusted series by 4%, according to data published the National Institute of Statistics (INS) on Thursday.
The gross series increase was driven by higher sales of non-food products (+7.8%) and retail trade of fuel for motor vehicles in dedicated stores (+4.2%). Sales of food, beverages, and tobacco decreased by 2%.
In the adjusted series, increases were recorded in non-food product sales (+7.6%), retail trade of fuel for motor vehicles in dedicated stores (+0.9%), and sales of food, beverages, and tobacco (+0.2%).
According to INS, the retail trade turnover volume (excluding motor vehicles and motorcycles), in gross series, in March 2025 compared to the previous month, increased overall by 12.7%, due to growth in sales of non-food products (+14.3%), food, beverages, and tobacco (+13.3%), and retail trade of fuel for motor vehicles in dedicated stores (+7.2%).
In contrast, the adjusted series of retail turnover volume (excluding motor vehicles and motorcycles) decreased overall by 0.3% in March 2025 compared to the previous month, due to a decline in retail trade of fuel for motor vehicles in dedicated stores (-2.2%). Sales of food, beverages, and tobacco remained at the same level, while sales of non-food products increased by 0.8%.
Also, the gross series of retail turnover volume (excluding motor vehicles and motorcycles), in March 2025 compared to March 2024, recorded an overall increase of 4.9%, due to growth in sales of non-food products (+11.6%) and in retail trade of fuel for motor vehicles in dedicated stores (+0.9%). Sales of food, beverages, and tobacco decreased by 1.3%.
In the adjusted series, retail turnover volume in March 2025 compared to March 2024 increased overall by 3.4%, due to growth in sales of non-food products (+8.4%) and food, beverages, and tobacco (+0.6%). Retail trade of fuel for motor vehicles in dedicated stores decreased by 2.3%.
