Romania is closer than ever to the goal of becoming an energy security provider for the European Union and the growing interest of the states in the region towards the country, as the main gas producer in the European Union, is just one of the elements that confirm this new role, believes the Minister of Energy, Sebastian Burduja.
„At the Euro Industry Summit 2025, we spoke about the historical role that Romania is increasingly assuming: that of energy security provider for the European Union states. Gradually, we are moving from an objective set upon taking over the mandate at the Ministry of Energy to its effective operationalization. The growing interest of the states in the region in Romania, as the main gas producer in the European Union – a status that will be strongly consolidated by the implementation of the Neptun Deep project – is just one of the elements that confirm this new role that we are starting to play. Today, Romania is closer than ever to the objective of becoming an energy security provider for the European Union”, the Minister of Energy wrote on his Facebook account on Wednesday.
He emphasized that Romania did not intend to abandon the energy transition process, considering, however, that pragmatism is important in this entire process.
„We also discussed the efforts we made at the Ministry of Energy in the field of renewable energy. I remind you – over 14 billion euros in non-reimbursable funds was drawn for projects intended for the production of energy from renewable sources and the development of related infrastructure, such as batteries or photovoltaic panels, plus the modernization of the transport and distribution of electricity and natural gas. Romania has in no way proposed to abandon the energy transition process, but, I repeat, it is important that both we and the European Union show pragmatism in this entire process. The energy transition must not be opposed to regaining the competitiveness of the European Union”, Sebastian Burduja pointed out.
He reaffirmed that the resources we currently have must be developed, from production capacities to transport and storage infrastructure. In this context, the minister of Energy stated that Romania has consolidated its role as a regional energy hub by completing the BRUA and Ungheni-Chisinau gas pipelines, modernizing interconnections and advancing work on the Tuzla-Podisor gas pipeline.
„This strategic infrastructure allows us to ensure gas supplies from diversified sources, both for domestic consumption and for neighboring states, including the Republic of Moldova. Romania has the advantage of diverse resources – gas, hydro, nuclear, wind, solar – and our strategy is to capitalize on this mix for energy security and competitive prices. We have been and are firm in renegotiating the timetable for eliminating coal from domestic production. Romania cannot afford to close production capacities without putting something in place. We have already opened discussions at European level to obtain an extension of the deadlines, and our efforts continue so that Romania’s position is supported and accepted. Romania must be a pillar of European energy security. Energy security is, in fact, a key-component of European security. You cannot have competitiveness without access to energy at normal prices. You cannot have strong economies without competitiveness. You cannot invest in defense without strong national economies to support this effort,” Burduja also wrote. AGERPRES
