Romanian tennis player Yannick Theodor Alexandrescu on Monday advanced to the round of 16 of the boys’ singles event at the French Open, the second Grand Tournament of the year, after defeating Finnish Linus Lagerbohm in the second round 6-2 7-6 (7/3).
In the round of 16, Alexandrescu, who in the first round beat British Oliver Bonding 6-4 6-3, will play Austrian Thilo Behrmann, agerpres reports.
Compatriot Stefan Horia Haita will face off in the second round American Noah Johnston, after defeating the third seed, Finnish Oskari Paldanius, 6-7 (9/11) 6-3 6-3.
In the girls’ events, Romanian Giulia Safina Popa started with a victory on Monday, 7-6 (7/1) 6-2 against Slovakian Kali Supova. In the second round, Popa will play Austria’s Lilli Tagger.
On Sunday, Maia Ilinca Burcescu defeated American Maya Iyengar in the first round, 6-1 6-2, and her next opponent will be Czech Alena Kovackova, the tenth seed.
Diana-Ioana Simionescu was defeated on Sunday, in the first round, by Spain’s Neus Torner Sensano, 6-4 3-6 6-2.In boys’ doubles, Alexandrescu and Japan’s Ryo Tabata, the fourth seed, progressed to the round of 16 after 7-5 6-4 against Americans Ryan Cozad/Maximus Dussault.
The next opponents will be the Russian Timofei Derepasko and the Brazilian Luis Guto Miguel, who won 6-2 6-1 against Romanian-Brazilian pair Stefan Horia Haita/Pedro Henrique Chabalgoity.
In the girls’ doubles, Diana-Ioana Simionescu and Russian Rada Zolotareva advanced to the round of 16 after 6-1 6-2 against French Eleejah Inisan/Daphnee Mpetshi Perricard. The next opponents will be decided in the Giulia Safina Popa/Kaki Supova versus N.3 twins Alena Kovackova/Jana Kovackova fixture.
Maia Burcescu will pair up with Serbian Luna Vujovic.
