Thousands of people are participating on Friday, Europe Day, in the pro-Europe rally, organized by the Resistance and the Romanian Initiative in Bucharest.
„I believe in a European Romania and I also believe that our presence here must be a message to Romanian society through which we overcome this fault, this division that we have seen in its most hideous form in recent months. We do not have to end up here, we do not deserve to be here. Romania is a state that has worked very hard to be in the European Union, to be in NATO. We deserve a better destiny. All the people you see here came not because they hate anyone, not against anyone, but rather to emphasize a very simple message: Romania is and will remain a European state. I feel hope, I am starting to believe more in a decent Romania, in a Romania that wants a European path and I really believe that we are capable of doing this”, Marcel Bartic, history professor and organizer of the event, told AGERPRES.
The marchers carried banners with messages such as: „We go out to vote, we stay in the EU”; „We vote for Romania in Europe, we are not leaving”; „I vote”. They also waved the Romanian and European flags.
According to Declic, one of the organizers, „Romania is at a crossroads”.
„The first round of the presidential elections showed us that extremism is one step away from completely seizing power. Extremism is not an abstract threat. It is real, organized and present. It aggressively promotes itself online, promises miracles on TikTok, spreads hatred, threatens people and defies the law. It mocks anyone who criticizes it and hides its connections with violent, anti-democratic groups. This is not politics, it is a danger”, notes Declic.
